The Astros Blanked The Red Sox 5-0 To Reach The World Series For The Third Time In Five Years

 

    The improbable 2021 postseason ride for the Red Sox ended abruptly tonight at Minute Maid Park as the Astros shut them out 5-0 in Game 6 of the ALCS. Houston advances to their third World Series in five years so it's safe to say that the better team ultimately won. It was quite a turnaround after the Sox led the ALCS 2-1 with their offense seemingly firing on all cylanders. Since then, they were blown out 9-2 in Game 4 after giving up seven runs in the ninth inning and they were embarrassed 9-1 in Game 5. Are you sensing a pattern here? Boston's bats went completely silent one last time as they could only manage two total hits and two walks against rookie Luis Garcia (5.2 IP, 1 hit, 7 Ks, 1 BB) and four Astros relievers. Houston will face either the Braves or the Dodgers in the World Series starting on Tuesday night, Atlanta currently leads the NLCS 3-2 with Game 6 tomorrow night (8:08, TBS). 

    With Boston sports fans high expectations, any season that doesn't end in a championship is always a disappointment but if we take a step back, you have to remember where these Red Sox were coming from after last year's nightmare Covid-19 season. They overachieved and it is pretty remarkable that they got this far with all their obvious issues and shortcomings. Let's hope this run inspires Boston's chief robot nerd Chaim Bloom to invest some money in starting pitching, relievers and even a few veteran utility players. This group can no longer sneak up on anyone and likewise, their expectations for next season will be way higher so the Red Sox will have to find more talent because the gap between them and the Astros was sizable as the three straight losses to close the series proved. 

    There were signs right away that this wouldn't be Boston's night as center fielder Kike Hernandez (who was incredible in the playoffs) dropped a long fly ball by DH and ALCS MVP Yordan Alvarez (4-for-4, 2 runs, 2B, 3B, RBI) in the first inning that scored Houston third baseman Alex Bregman. Red Sox starter Nathan Eovaldi (4.1 IP, 1 ER, 4 Ks, 1 BB) pitched well enough in a very tough spot but his teammates completely let him down. Hernandez barely missed another home run by mere inches in the sixth inning as his triple hit just below the yellow line on the left center field wall. Unfortunately, there were already two outs so the next batter-third baseman Rafael Devers-popped up to strand Kike at third base with Boston's best scoring chance of the evening.

    Alvarez scored on a double play ball in the bottom of the sixth inning for a 2-0 Houston lead and the Astros officially sealed it in the eighth inning when right fielder Kyle Tucker hit a three-run bomb to left field off Boston reliever Adam Ottavino that plated Alvarez and shortstop Carlos Correa. It was such a crazy season for the Red Sox in terms of some awesome highs and many terrible lows. However, I think the lasting memory from this year's club is that they helped bring (some) people back to the team. Particularly in October, they were wildly entertaining and hopefully this season will serve as a springboard for future campaigns and more titles. The Patriots (2-4) are not winning a Super Bowl anytime soon, the Celtics (0-2) appear to be regressing and the Bruins (2-1) are good but they will fold in the playoffs as usual so believe it or not, I think the Sox are the closest Boston team to a title (unless you count the Revs but who really does?). Baseball will never be what it once was in terms of popularity both here and in other markets but at its core, Boston is still a baseball city when the Red Sox are at least competitive. 

Red Sox Earn The Split In Houston With A 9-5 Victory In Game 2 Behind A Pair Of Grand Slams

 

    Coming into the ALCS, we were all fearful of Houston's lethal offense and for good reason: they are deep and loaded with playoff experience. At the same time, we also have to recognize that Boston's lineup is just as dangerous as illustarted by today's 9-5 win by the Red Sox in Game 2 at Minute Maid Park. With that important victory, the series heads to Boston tied 1-1 with the next three games at Fenway Park. The final score is a bit misleading since Boston was up 8-0 in the second inning after a grand slams by DH J.D. Martinez and third baseman Rafael Devers (the first time in MLB history that a team hit two grand slams in the same playoff game) in consecutive frames. Boston's center fielder Kike Hernandez continued to be the hottest hitter on the planet as he crushed his fifth home run of the postseason (tying a Red Sox record for most HRs in an entire postseason) and Nathan Eovaldi (5.1 IP, 3 ER, 5 hits, 3 Ks, 1 BB) gave the Sox another solid outing.

    Houston's rookie starting pitcher Leury Garcia was no match for Eovaldi as he only lasted 1+ inning before he was pulled with a fake injury (right knee discomfort). Former Rays great Jake Odorizzi followed Garcia and he also got knocked around as he allowed four earned runs and seven hits in four innings. Martinez's grand slam went to the opposite field as it scored first baseman Kyle Schwarber, Devers and Verdugo. Devers' grand slam in the next inning landed in a similar spot down the right field line and it plated catcher Kevin Plawecki, second baseman Christian Arroyo and Hernandez. Both of those memorable blasts were the first home runs of the series for Martinez and Devers while Hernandez already has three in the first two games against the Astros following his solo shot to left field in the fourth inning. 

    Houston got on the board in the fourth with an RBI double from right fielder Kyle Tucker that scored DH Yordan Alvarez. First baseman Yuli Gurriel followed with a two-run single that brought in shortstop Carlos Correa and Tucker. Red Sox manager Alex Cora's bullpen was good at first as Northeastern's Adam Ottavino got the last two outs in the sixth inning before the superb Garrett Whitlock pitched two scoreless innings with a pair of strikeouts. Lefty scrub Darwinzon Hernandez came on in the ninth inning with a 9-3 advantage but it was not nearly enough as he gave up solo home runs to Gurriel and pinch hitter Jason Castro. This forced Cora to bring in Ryan Brasier who retired Astros second baseman Jose Altuve on a deep fly ball to center field to end it. Whew. 

    I'm not saying it's going to happen since I believe that Houston is a better team than Tampa Bay but the Rays did win Game 1 of the ALDS before losing Game 2 at home and coming to Boston where they lost Games 3 and 4 to get eliminated from the playoffs. With three games in three days at Fenway starting on Monday night (8:08, FS1), the Sox have a wonderful opportunity to take control of this series and put themselves in a great position to reach yet another World Series. Including the Wild Card game vs. the Yankees, Boston is 3-0 at home this postseason and it should be an awesome atmosphere for these pivotal ALCS contests against a budding rival.

Christian Vazquez's Epic Walk-Off HR In The 13th Inning Puts The Sox One Win Away From The ALCS

 

    After getting blanked by the Rays 5-0 in Game 1 of the ALDS on Thursday night, the Red Sox responded with a resounding 14-6 victory on Friday in Game 2 at Tropicana Field but they topped that today by surviving a 13-inning marathon (fitttingly a day before the first Boston Marathon to ever be held in October) and winning 6-4 on a walk-off two-run homer (the first of the playoffs) by catcher Christian Vazquez. Suddenly, they have a 2-1 series lead (remember it is only a best-of-five series) with a chance to eliminate Tampa tomorrow night (7:07, FS1). Vazquez is the obvious hero for the Sox but their starting pitcher Nathan Eovaldi (5 IP, 2 ER, 3 hits, 8 Ks, 1 BB) was good and Nick Pivetta (1-0) was brilliant with four scoreless innings of relief (with 7 strikeouts) to get the win.   

    Boston outhit Tampa Bay 15-10 with center fielder Kike Hernandez (3-for-6, HR, 2 RBIs), first baseman Kyle Schwarber (3-for-5, HR, 2 runs) and second baseman Christian Arroyo (3-for-5, 2B, run) all having huge performances at the plate. Other than Vazquez's bomb (only the 8th time in MLB history that a catcher has hit a walk-off HR in extra innings), the play that will be remembered for eternity from Game 3 was a bizarre ground-rule double that turned out to be an enormous break for the home team. With pinch hitter Yandy Diaz on first base after a one-out single, center fielder Kevin Kiermaier roped a two-out double to right field that bounced off the wall, then ricocheted off right fielder Hunter Renfroe and over the wall. Diaz would have easily scored the go-ahead run but according to the MLB rule, it was a ground-rule double which meant that Diaz did not score and Kiermaier could not advance to third base. Instead, Pivetta struck out catcher Mike Zunino (0-for-6 with 4 strikeouts) to end the top of the 13th inning. 

    Renfroe walked with one out in the bottom of the 13th inning against Tampa Bay's reliever Luis Patino (0-1). That set the stage for the most memorable hit of Vazquez's Red Sox/MLB career as he hit a fly ball that just got over the Green Monster and into the front row of seats up there. Each club had a two-run lead earlier in the game: left fielder Austin Meadows hit a two-run blast (his 1st of the playoffs) to right in the first inning that scored Rays phenom Wander Franco for a 2-0 advantage. Boston chipped away with a lead-off shot by Schwarber (his first of the postseason) in the first inning then Kike's RBI single in the third inning plated Arroyo with the tying run. Third baseman Rafael Devers (did you know that his arm/wrist doesn't feel well?) followed with another run-scoring single that scored Schwarber and gave the Sox a 3-2 lead-their first of Game 3. 

    Hernandez set a franchise record with a hit in seven consecutive plate appearances and he put an exclamation point on that with a solo home run (his 2nd of the series) to left in the fifth inning. Tampa's two-run deficit only lasted until the eighth inning when Franco hit a solo homer (his 1st of the playoffs) to left and outfielder Randy Arozarena tied it on an RBI double that scored pinch runner Manuel Margot. Starting extra innings with a runner on second base is only a regular season thing hence why this contest took over five ours to complete. Red Sox manager Alex Cora had to mix and match with five other relievers before he left Pivetta (who originally was supposed to start Game 4) in there for good. By using an opener-Drew Rasmussen who lasted two innings-Rays manager Kevin Cash was forced to put in seven (!) other relievers before Patino fell apart in his second inning of work.

    As you can imagine, the Red Sox no doubt want to end this if possible on Monday. They want no part of a winner-take-all Game 5 on Wednesday back at the Trop. Furthermore, there is plenty of pressure on Tampa as well since they reached the World Series last year and rolled to an AL East title thanks to 100 regular season victories. Eduardo Rodriguez could not get out of the second inning in Game 1 vs. Tampa but he will receive a major chance to redeem himself in Game 4 because he will start for Boston. Besides Pivetta, all the other Red Sox pitchers that came out of the bullpen tonight threw less than 20 pitches meaning I think they would be available if needed tomorrow night. The most effective were Ryan Brasier (who pitched a scoreless inning with 1 strikeout) and Garrett Whitlock who nailed down the last four outs (3 strikeouts) to send the tight matchup to extra innings. Thanks to Chicago's 12-6 pasting of Houston this evening, no teams will be swept in the ALDS or NLDS this season. All four series will be in action tomorrow so it should be a great day (and night) for baseball.

Sox Live To See Another Day While The Yanks Are Done After Losing 6-2 In The AL Wild Card Game

 

    Last night was the first time that the Red Sox had ever appeared in the winner-take-all AL Wild Card game and it didn't disappoint as they dispatched the Yankees 6-2 at Fenway Park. With the win, the Red Sox advance to the best-of-five ALDS vs. another AL East foe-Tampa Bay-starting tomorrow night (8:07, FS1). Boston's starter Nathan Eovaldi (5.1 IP, 1 ER, 4 hits, 8 Ks, 0 BBs) easily outdueled New York's ace Gerrit Cole (2+ IP, 3 ER, 4 hits, 3 Ks, 2 BBs). The Yankees' bullpen was supposed to be one of their biggest advantages but it didn't matter since Cole put them in such a hole, haha apparently that's what $324 million buys you these days in MLB.   

Neither offense did much: Boston had seven hits while New York managed only six. The difference was that the Red Sox made their hits really count. Sox shortstop Xander Bogaerts hit a two-run bomb to straight away center field in the first and DH Kyle Schwarber cranked a solo blast to right field in the third inning. Left fielder Alex Verdugo was also a star for the home team with an RBI double in the sixth and a two-run single in the seventh inning. All that New York's top heavy lineup could provide was a solo shot by first baseman Anthony Rizzo that cut it to 3-1 in the sixth inning while DH Giancarlo Stanton (3-for-4) hit a meaningless solo shot in the ninth inning when the Yanks were trailing 6-1.  

    Ironically for a team that was so shaky defensively all season, the play of the game came from a sweet relay throw from Boston's center fielder Kike Hernandez to Bogaerts to catcher Kevin Plawecki. Stanton just missed a homer (the ball hit a few feet under the lip of the Green Monster) and New York's bozo third base coach Phil Nevin sent right fielder Aaron Judge home with one out. That stupid decision did not turn out well for the visitors as Kike quickly threw the ball to Bogaerts who pegged a perfect strike to Plawecki who got the tag down on a sliding Judge. It was an awesome sequence that saved Red Sox reliever Ryan Brasier who escaped the inning by having left fielder Joey Gallo pop out. 

    Boston rookie Tanner Houck pitched a dominant seventh inning with two strikeouts in a clean frame and Hansel Robles followed with a 1-2-3 eighth inning including a strikeout. The other prized Red Sox rookie pitcher Garrett Whitlock allowed that Stanton homer in the ninth but that was it. By surviving the Wild Card game, I believe Boston is playing with house money from here on out. Tampa won the division and 100 games this season, which following their World Series appearance last year proves that they are not a fluke. They are the best team in the American League and one of the top clubs in baseball so they will be favored but anything can happen in the playoffs, particularly in a short series. Game 2 is on Friday night (7:02, FS1) at the Trop while Game 3 is on Sunday afternoon (4:07, MLB Network) back here. If necessary,  Game 4 would be on Marathon Monday in Boston while a do-or-die Game 5 would be on Wednesday in Tampa Bay. Get excited everybody, the Red Sox are in the mix for the World Series this October!

Thank You Hunter Renfroe For Not Letting The Red Sox Get Swept By The Rays Yet Again In 2021

 

There is a reason that I haven't written about the Red Sox in weeks: between an absurd Covid-19 outbreak and a mostly pathetic stretch of performances, they gave me absolutely no motivation to even mention them. Tonight at least was different though as Boston (80-62 overall, 44-29 home) held off Tampa Bay (88-52 overall, 43-26 away) 2-1 at Fenway Park. The victory allowed the Sox to avoid the three-game sweep at the hands of the Rays (who finished 11-8 against them in the regular season) while also inching past the floundering Yankees (78-61) for the top AL Wild Card spot. As you can guess from the final score, Boston got some brilliant pitching from starter Nathan Eovaldi (7 IP, 3 hits, 0 ER, 8 Ks, 2 BBs) and Hansel Robles of all people had a scoreless ninth inning with two strikeouts to record his 12th save of the season. 

    With that said, there is no question who the main star of this game was for the Red Sox: it had to be right fielder Hunter Renfroe. He hit a go-ahead two-run homer (his 27th of the season) in the eighth inning that also plated pinch hitter Kyle Schwarber and had not one but two outfield assists (he leads MLB with 16 of them this season). The second one could not have been more dramatic either since he threw out Tampa third baseman Joey Wendle at third base trying to stretch a double into a triple. It was a killer mistake by Wendle because it was the final out of the game, ouch babe! Haha what a way to lose granted the Rays have plenty of cushion with the second best record in MLB.

    After Rays starter Shane McLanahan pitched five scoreless innings, Tampa Bay finally struck first in the eighth inning as designated hitter Nelson Cruz knocked in second baseman Brandon Lowe (2 hits, run, walk, stolen base) with an RBI double to temporarily put Tampa Bay ahead 1-0. The Red Sox took control in the bottom of the eighth inning as Renfroe crushed a two-run blast (his 27th of the season) off reliver JT Chargois (5-1) and entirely over the green monster. With closer Matt Barnes out for a long time with Covid-19, it's been a complete mess for the Sox when it comes to the ninth inning and having a lead this season. After Josh Taylor and Garrett Richards (7-7) combined to survive the eighth inning and only trail by a run, Robles was who got the call for the save opporunity with other options either out for the moment or way overworked (Garrett Whitlock and Adam Ottavino say hello).    

    Boston is nine games behind Tampa Bay but we have known for a long time that the AL East was all but clinched by the Rays. The AL Wild Card is the best race in baseball with Boston a half game ahead of the Yankees, 1.5 games in front of Toronto (who has won their last seven games in a row), 2.5 games ahead of the Mariners (76-64) and three games ahead of Oakland (75-64). After an off day on Thursday, the Red Sox begin a brutal six-game road trip against the White Sox (80-59) for three games followed by three games at Seatlle. Boston is only three games above .500 (36-33) on the road this season so that is in jeopardy of falling below .500 if this trip goes sideways. There is no question that the White Sox are one of the best teams in baseball while the Mariners are currently one of the hottest so each club promises to be a handful for the Red Sox to deal with at the moment.

The Best Player In Baseball (Shohei Ohtani) Helps Shut Down The Hottest Team In MLB (Red Sox)

 

    Hardcore fans of this blog will note that I have rarely written about losses by the Red Sox (54-33 overall, 27-16 away) this season, not only because they have been few and far between but since it is hard to make a loss in baseball remotely interesting to read about. Tonight was one of those rare occasions where a 5-3 loss by Boston to the Angels (43-42 overall, 25-20 home) at Angel Stadium of Anaheim nevertheless was headline news. The most exciting thing to happen to the sport in years-Shohei Ohtani (4-1)-was the starting pitcher for LA and he also batted second in the Angels' lineup. The man who is the first player ever to be named a two-way All-Star (pitcher and hitter) in the same season went seven innings, allowing two runs on five hits with four strikeouts to earn the win. He also had an RBI double and scored a run, haha is that all? 

    On paper, it looked like an awesome matchup since the Red Sox had won 10 of their last 11 games and they had their own All-Star starting pitcher-Nathan Eovaldi (9-5)-opposing Ohtani. Eovaldi has been really great in his last few outings (part of the reason that he was a bit of a surprise first-time All-Star) but that was not the case this evening as he allowed three runs in the first inning and he could never really get into a groove. Boston only had one brief lead all game: designated hitter J.D. Martinez drove in center fielder Kike Hernandez with a sacrifice fly in the first inning. Ohtani and the Angels responded right away as he knocked in second baseman David Fletcher (4-for-4 with 2 doubles) with that RBI double then his catcher Max Stassi hit a two-run homer (his 6th of the season) to left field to score his batterymate. 

    From there, Ohtani efficiently (89 pitches) started to mow down the Sox until Martinez hit an RBI single in the sixth inning that scored catcher Connor Wong and cut LA's lead to 3-2. Boston could have taken a 4-3 lead in that frame but center fielder Juan Lagares robbed Sox shortstop Xander Bogaerts of what would have been a two-run bomb to right center. Just like in the first inning, the Angels answered with a pair of runs in the sixth: former Red Sox great Jose Iglesias drove in a run with a ground out then Stassi scored on an infield single by Fletcher. Los Angeles' set-up man Michael Mayers pitched a scoreless eighth inning for his 11th hold of the season before Angels closer Raisel Iglesias struck out two in the ninth inning as he recorded his 17th save of the season. The other Sox run came on right fielder Hunter Renfroe's solo shot off Iglesias (his 13th of the season) with two outs in the ninth. 

    The Red Sox conclude their six-game trip to California tomorrow afternoon (4:07, NESN) with Eduardo Rodriguez (6-4) facing crappy lefty Andrew Heaney (4-6). No more late night start times for awhile! After winning two of three games over the weekend in Oakland (49-38), Boston has gone 3-2 on this West Coast swing so ending it with one last victory going into a much-deserved day off on Thursday would be sweet. E-Rod has been much better in his last two starts, giving the club hope that he is finally regaining his stellar form of a few years ago.

Sox Start July By Completing Perfect (7-0) Homestand & Clinching Four-Game Sweep Vs. KC

 

    Today will go down as one of the most predictable games of the 2021 season for the Red Sox (51-31 overall, 27-17 home). In the finale of their seven-game homestand, they flat out embarrassed the Royals (33-47 overall, 15-28 away) 15-1 this afternoon at Fenway Park. Kansas City has been on the road for the past 10 games (which must feel like forever) so it was no surprise that they laid down and got swept in the four-game series by the Red Sox who have won seven straight games. Boston racked up 17 hits as every batter with a plate appearance had at least one hit which sent the Royals to their ninth loss in a row. Red Sox starter Nathan Eovaldi (7 IP, 5 hits, 0 ERs, 6 Ks, 0 BBs) pitched seven scoreless innings that only took 84 pitches as KC clearly couldn't get out of town fast enough. 

    Boston hit four home runs, starting with second baseman Kike Hernandez who had a leadoff homer (his 9th HR of the season) over the Green Monster for the third time in the past five contests. Left fielder (not a misprint) J.D. Martinez followed with a solo home run of his own (his 17th of the season) in the fourth inning to straightaway center field and first baseman Danny Santana added a three-run bomb to right center (his 3rd of the season) later in the frame for a 5-0 lead. Boston scored four more runs in the fifth inning on a two-run single by first-time All-Star third baseman Rafael Devers that scored Martinez and center fielder Alex Verdugo; Devers scored on an infield single by Santana and right fielder Hunter Renfroe came home on a balk by Kansas City reliever Ervin Santana. 

    Devers crushed a three-run home run (his 20th of the season) in the sixth inning that scored Martinez and DH (for the day)/All-Star Xander Bogaerts. Pinch hitter Michael Chavis' sacrifice fly scored shortstop Marwin Gonzalez (3-for-4) in the seventh inning. The final two runs for the Sox came in the eighth inning as Gonzalez's RBI single plated Devers and Santana's fantastic day at the plate concluded with an RBI double that scored Renfroe. Boston was this close to a recording an elusive shutout but sadly Royals center fielder Jarrod Dyson had other plans as he drove in left fielder Ryan O'Hearn in the ninth inning.

    Everything came up Red Sox today as they beat the rain and flew out to California tonight at a reasonable hour. They will be celebrating July 4th this weekend in Oakland (48-35 overall, 26-20 home). It's a three-game set between two of the best teams in the American League so it should be very entertaining. Tomorrow night (9:40, NESN), Eduardo Rodriguez (6-4) takes on Frankie Montas (7-7); on Saturday night (7:15, FOX) in front of a national TV audience, Garrett Richards (4-5) faces lefty Cole Irvin (6-7), what could possibly go wrong there?; finally, on the afternoon (4:07, NESN) of July 4th, Nick Pivetta (6-3) opposes James Kaprielian (4-2). The heatwave is over in New England but the forecast for the next few days looks sketchy with plenty of rain so settle in for a possible playoff preview type of series against a quality opponent in a place where Boston typically struggles.

After Going 1-9 Against The Yankees Last Season, The Sox Have Started 5-0 Vs. New York In 2021

 

    They won the series opener 5-3 against the Yankees (40-36 overall, 19-18 away) last night at a sold out Fenway Park and then the Red Sox (46-31 overall, 22-17 home) kept the good vibes going tonight with a 4-2 victory. With those two wins, they improved to 5-0 against New York this season (their best start since 2009's 9-0 record against their biggest rival) with a chance to pick up their second sweep vs. them in 2021 as the series ends tomorrow afternoon (1:10, NESN). Sox starter Nathan Eovaldi (7.2 IP, 1 ER, 7 hits, 6 Ks, 0 BBs) threw his second gem of the year against one of his former clubs as Boston's de-facto No. 1 pitcher improved to 8-4. 

    Yanks starter Jordan Montgomery (6 IP, 3 ER, 8 hits, 5 Ks, 2 BBs) was decent enough, the issue as usual for his mediocre (by their very high standards) club is that they really struggle to score runs if they are not hitting (mostly solo) home runs. Conversely, Boston's offense is good enough that they can find other ways to score rather than always relying on the long ball in every single game to win. It looked like this would be a relatively easy victory for the home team as the Red Sox scored twice in the second inning, they added a run in the third and took a 4-0 lead in the seventh. New York finally got on the board in the eighth inning but former Yankees great Adam Ottavino got first baseman Luke Voit to ground out with the bases loaded to end a massive threat in that frame.  

    With Matt Barnes unavailable this evening, Ottavino was the closer and he needed 33 pitches to record his fifth save of the season but somehow he did it. After allowing a run in the ninth, he struck out Yankees star Aaron Judge with runners on first and second base to end the game as the fans that were at Fenway went wild. Boston had opened the scoring with center fielder Kike Hernandez's sacrifice fly that scored shortstop Xander Bogaerts (3-for-3 w/2B). Third baseman Rafael Devers did an amazing thing on the base paths later in that inning-something which you never say about him-when he scored on a foul out by first base. Bogey scored in the third inning on right fielder Hunter Renfroe's (3-for-4) infield single and a Bogaerts sacrifice fly plated second baseman Michael Chavis in the seventh inning. Both of New York's runs were produced by second baseman DJ LeMahieu (4-for-5): he hit a solo homer to right in the eighth (his seventh of the season) and he drove in pinch hitter Rougned Odor with an RBI single in the ninth.

    It is bizarre to see a Red Sox-Yankees Sunday game take place in the afternoon but oh well, it will be refreshing not to have a four-hour marathon on Sunday Night Baseball. Tomorrow, we get Eduardo Rodriguez (5-4) vs. New York's ace Gerrit Cole (8-3) in the start of yet another heatwave. Eddie has been a mess for nearly two straight months, going eight consecutive starts without recording a win. Cole's numbers have noticeably dropped since MLB cracked down on sticky substances (hmmm!) but he is still a good pitcher so I'd be shocked to see him get outdueled by this terrible version of Rodriguez. Then again, Boston has owned New York in the early going this season so perhaps something goofy will happen and they will improve to 6-0 against them in 2021. As it stands right now, the Sox are 5.5 games ahead of the Yanks and only half a game behind the first-place Rays (47-31) in the AL East therefore every contest truly matters.

Go Figure: After An Embarrassing 18-4 Loss To The Blue Jays, The Red Sox Walk Them Off Yet Again

 

    The Red Sox (40-27 overall, 20-17 home) and the Blue Jays (33-31 overall, 20-18 away) just concluded one of the strangest four-game series that you will ever see at Fenway Park. To review: Boston walked off Toronto 6-5 on Friday night, the Jays beat them 7-2 on Saturday afternoon then absolutely wiped the floor with the Sox 18-4 on Sunday afternoon. That left tonight's series finale which naturally turned into a pitcher's duel that was ultimately won 2-1 by Red Sox third baseman's Rafael Devers' (2 hits) walk-off single that scored right fielder Alex Verdugo (2 hits). The net result of these bizarre four days was a series split for the Sox who remain three games back of the Rays (43-24)-owners of the best record in MLB. Toronto is in third-place in the AL East but I doubt that they'll ever catch Tampa Bay since they are 8.5 games behind them. 

    It's no coincidence that Boston's shaky at best starting rotation has completely fallen apart since Major League Baseball has turned its attention to foreign substances (Spider Tack!) used by pitchers all around the sport. The Red Sox pitching was so brutal on Sunday that reliever Ryan Weber allowed 11 earned runs (before he was promptly sent back to Worcester today where he belongs) and manager Alex Cora had to use not one but two position players-Marwin Gonzalez and Christian Arroyo-just to get out of the stupid blowout loss alive. For all of those reasons and more, it was heartening to see Nathan Eovaldi (6.2 IP, 0 ER, 3 hits, 4 Ks, 1 BB) pitch great against one of the best lineups in baseball. Toronto's prized rookie hurler Alek Manoah (6 IP, 1 ER, 4 hits, 5 Ks, 1 BB) nearly matched Eovaldi except for one mistake that he made early in his stellar outing. 

    Verdugo drove in center fielder Enrique Hernandez with an RBI double in the third inning that gave the home team a 1-0 lead. Cora let Eovaldi try and get out of his own jam which paid off when he induced Jays center fielder Randal Grichuk to ground into a double play. That left DH Vladimir Guerrero Jr on third base and reliever Josh Taylor stranded him there by striking out first baseman Rowdy Tellez to end the top of the seventh. It's hard to believe but after his 1-2-3 eighth inning with two more strikeouts, Taylor has recorded 18 scoreless appearances in a row. 

    It looked like the Red Sox might escape with a 1-0 victory since their usually lights out closer Matt Barnes (3-1) struck out the first two batters that he faced in the ninth inning. After taking a strike on the first pitch of his at bat, Guerrero crushed a game-tying solo home run (his MLB-best 22nd of the season) over the Green Monster. Sox pitchers will no doubt be seeing Vladdy Jr. in their nightmares for weeks since he hit a home run in every game of this series. Luckily for Boston, Blue Jays manager Charlie Montoya keeps trying to make Rafael Dolis (1-3) as the closer against the Red Sox a thing. For the third time (!!) already this season, the guy with a 5.14 ERA cost his team a game as it only took him 11 pitches to cough this one up. Verdugo led off the bottom of the ninth with an infield single, DH J.D. Martinez followed with a single and shortstop Xander Bogaerts flied out to left before Devers rallied from down 0-2 in the count to take a splitter for a ball then he launched a shot to left center that bounced off the scoreboard on the Monster. 

    This was Boston's last game at Fenway for awhile: they are gone for the next 10 days on a road trip that includes eight games in three different cities. The Red Sox play two in Atlanta (30-33 overall,  17-17 home)-the third-place team in the NL East; three in Kansas City (30-35 overall, 16-16 home)-the third-place team in the AL Central; then three at Tampa Bay next week before finally coming home next weekend to play the mediocre Yankees (33-32 overall, 16-16 away)-the fourth-place team in the AL East. Tomorrow night (7:20, NESN), Eduardo Rodriguez (5-4) faces Braves rookie Tucker Davidson (0-0) and on Wednesday night (7:20, NESN), Garrett Richards (4-4) takes on another Braves youngster Ian Anderson (4-3). It's tough to have any faith in E-Rod or Richards at the moment so Boston will need to beat up on Atlanta's starting pitchers who have both been on a roll lately.

Red Sox Take Round One With The Yankees, 5-2 At Yankee Stadium As Eovaldi Shuts Them Down

 

    The Red Sox (34-23 overall, 18-10 away) didn't win a single game last season at Yankee Stadium in their wretched 2020, therefore tonight's 5-2 series-opening victory was Boston's first in the Bronx since 2019. The starting pitcher for the Sox-Nathan Eovaldi (7-2)-went six solid innings, allowing two runs (one earned) on eight hits with seven strikeouts and no walks. Boston's win put them 3.5 games ahead of New York for second-place in the AL East while Texas' (23-36) surprising 5-4 victory over the Rays (36-23) this evening left Tampa Bay only one game up on the Red Sox. Tampa is finally showing some signs of slowing down a bit (6-4 in their last 10 games) after being the hottest team in MLB for awhile.

    As good as Eovaldi's outing was, the two relievers that followed him out of the Sox' bullpen were even better. Hirokazu Sawamura got his first taste of the Red Sox-Yankees rivalry and he must have loved it as he went two scoreless innings and struck out five without allowing a hit. Around the same time that UConn baseball opened its 2021 NCAA Tournament journey with a 6-1 win vs. Michigan, Huskies alum Matt Barnes did his now customary thing by striking out the side in a 1-2-3 ninth inning for his 13th save of the season. Sawamura threw 29 pitches therefore I doubt that he'd be available on Saturday but Barnes only had 17 pitches so I think that he could be ready in the right spot for tomorrow's game if he is needed. 

    BC's Michael King (0-3) got the start for the Yanks and while he went 5.1 innings which is more than they could have expected, he made one fatal mistake: Red Sox third baseman Rafael Devers crushed a three-run bomb to the upper deck in right field in the first inning (his team-leading 15th HR of the season) that scored left fielder Alex Verdugo and shortstop Xander Bogaerts (2 singles, 2 runs). Boston opened up a 5-0 lead when first baseman Marwin Gonzalez (2 doubles) tacked on two more runs with a two-run double in the sixth down the left field line that scored right fielder Hunter Renfroe and Bogaerts. Both of New York's runs came in the home half of the sixth inning as right fielder Aaron Judge hit a Yankee Stadium special-an opposite field homer to right that just got over the fence. Luckily his team-leading 14th home run of the season was a solo shot so no big deal. The other Yankees run came when Gonzalez made two errors on the same play which is pretty hard for a big leaguer to do. 

    Tomorrow's game (7:15, FOX) starts at exactly the same time as Game 4 of Bruins-Islanders so I think I know what you'll be checking in on during commercials and intermissions from the hockey game or you can be a cool guy like me and have one of them on your laptop while the other is on your TV at the same time. As bad as the Yankees' offense has been this season, it could be a slugfest since Boston's former ace Eduardo Rodriguez (5-4, 5.64 ERA) takes on New York's Jameson Taillon (1-4, 5.10 ERA). Rodriguez has been a mess lately and arguably the Red Sox' worst starter in 2021 (as crazy as that sounds) while Taillon is a journeyman bum. This could serve as a good spot for Eddie to start to return to form or he could continue to struggle and give us more reasons to worry about him. Only time will tell as Boston tries to clinch the series already.

Still No Boston Marathon On Patriots' Day But At Least The Red Sox Crushed The White Sox 11-4

 

    Our world is still nothing like it was in pre-pandemic times but at least in terms of sports, we are slowly getting back to a sense of some normalcy. Patriots' Day is typically a sacred holiday in Massachusetts: the Boston Marathon starts in Hopkinton that morning and ends in downtown Boston that afternoon while the Red Sox always play a game at Fenway Park with an early start time of 11:10 a.m. In 2020, the Boston Marathon was virtual and MLB's regular season didn't start until July (mostly with empty stadiums) so you had to smile today when it was a sunny April day in the Bay State and the Red Sox (11-6 overall, 5-5 home) hosted the White Sox (8-9 overall, 5-6 away) in their four-game series finale. After getting swept 3-2 and 5-1 yesterday in a doubleheader, Boston bounced back with a resounding 11-4 win to gain a split of the series. The end result was never in doubt since the home team scored six runs in the first and led 10-2 by the fourth inning to cruise to the easy victory. 

White Sox starter Lucas Giolito (1-1) is a good pitcher, not that you would get that impression today if you watched the Red Sox run him over. In one plus innings, he allowed eight runs (7 earned) on eight hits with two walks and zero strikeouts. Is that bad? Things got so hopeless for Chicago that manager/your drunk grandpa Tony LaRussa used not one but two position players (Yermin Mercedes and UMass Lowell's Danny Mendick) to close out the last two innings. In situations like that, MLB should adopt some type of pseudo-Little League mercy rule. On the other side, Red Sox starter Nathan Eovaldi (3-1) had a better outing: 6.1 innings, four earned runs, nine hits, 10 strikeouts and zero walks. He threw exactly 100 pitches before being lifted for ace reliever Garrett Whitlock who was able to get the last eight outs (including 2 strikeouts) without allowing a hit or walk. How impressive has he been so far this season? 

    The Red Sox had 17 hits and six guys put together multi-hit performances, in fact first baseman Bobby Dalbec was the only Boston hitter to finish without a hit. DH J.D. Martinez (3-for-5, 2 RBIs, 2 runs), center fielder Alex Verdugo (3-for-4, 2 RBIs, BB) & second baseman Kike Hernandez (2-for-6, 2B, 2 runs) all hit solo homers. Catcher Christian Vazquez was 3-for-5 with two runs scored, third baseman Rafael Devers was 2-for-3 with two RBIs, two walks and two runs scored while left fielder Franchy Cordero was 2-for-4 with two RBIs and one walk. The only White Sox hitters to show up after their early morning wake-up calls were shortstop Tim Anderson (3-for-4, 2 runs, 2B) and right fielder Adam Eaton (2 2Bs, 3 RBIs).

    Chicago actually led for a very brief moment in time when center fielder Luis Robert doubled in Anderson in the first inning. Hernandez tied it with a lead-off home run (his 3rd HR of the season) that sneaked just over the line above the Green Monster. Devers and shortstop Marwin Gonzalez each added an RBI single before another run scored on a groundout then two more runs scored following a single by Cordero and a fielding error by left fielder Leury Garcia. Martinez crushed a homer to left in the second (his 6th HR of the season) and right fielder Hunter Renfroe drove in Devers with a sacrifice fly. 

    Eaton's RBI double in the third scored second baseman Nick Madrigal and cut it to 8-2 Red Sox but Verdugo answered in the bottom of the frame with a blast to right (his 3rd HR of the season). The Red Sox increased their lead to eight runs when Vazquez scored on Cordero's infield single in the fourth inning to make it 10-2 in favor of the home team. Eaton wasn't giving any at bats away as he notched another RBI double in the fifth that scored Anderson and the final White Sox run came in to score on a groundout in the seventh. Martinez provided the last run with an RBI single in the seventh that scored Hernandez. 

    Toronto (7-9 overall, 4-6 away) visits Fenway the next two nights for the first meetings of the season between the AL East rivals. Eduardo Rodriguez (2-0) faces Blue Jays ace Hyun Jin Ryu (1-1) tomorrow night (7:10, NESN) in a battle of quality lefties. On Wednesday night (7:10, NESN), it'll be the immortal Garrett Richards (0-1) vs. TBA. Toronto is tied with Baltimore (7-9) for third-place in the AL East, 3.5 games behind the first-place Red Sox but at least they are still 1.5 games ahead of the awful Yankees (5-10). The Red Sox lead MLB in runs scored (96) and they have the best run-differential in the American League (+28) so it would be nice if Rodriguez could give them a little more than the five inning outings that he's posted in his first two starts of 2021.  

The Red Sox Sweep A Doubleheader With The Twins As Their Win Streak Rolls On To Nine Games

 

    I hope that you have already started to pay attention to the Red Sox (9-3 overall, 6-0 away) this season because what they are doing right now is rather incredible. In today's adventure, Boston swept a doubleheader at Target Field against the Twins (5-7 overall, 1-5 home). The Red Sox took Game 1 by a score of 3-2 and then the nightcap turned into a blowout as they won that 7-1. Boston has won nine games in a row after getting swept by Baltimore (5-6) in their season opening series at Fenway Park while Minnesota has dropped its last five straight games. Besides the constant winning-which is always fun-the Red Sox are making it interesting by getting the results in different ways. I would still maintain that the starting rotation is their biggest question mark but thus far, it has done the job while different relievers and hitters step up in every game. 

    Keep in mind that all doubleheaders are seven innings long (unless they go to extra innings) thanks to a much needed rule change by MLB last season to tighten things up a bit. Nathan Eovaldi (2-1) started the opener this afternoon and he was relatively sharp for the 82 pitches that manager Alex Cora had him throw. In five innings, Eovaldi allowed two earned runs on five hits with three strikeouts and no walks. He outlasted Twins starter Kenta Maeda (1-1) who only went 4.1 innings, allowing three runs (2 earned) on seven hits with five strikeouts and two walks. 

    In Game 1, Boston scored all of its runs in the second inning while Minnesota did the same in the third inning. Right fielder Hunter Renfroe gave the visitors a 1-0 lead with an RBI single that scored first baseman Marwin Gonzalez. Renfroe ended up later scoring on a throwing error by Maeda then second baseman Christian Arroyo (2 for 4, 2B) added a run-scoring single of his own that allowed left fielder Franchy Cordero to cross home plate. For the Twins, second baseman Jorge Polanco hit a two-run single that scored catcher Ryan Jeffers and shortstop JT Riddle. Boston's bullpen got two scoreless innings that let them hang on to that one-run lead for good. Lefty Darwinzon Hernandez pitched a 1-2-3 sixth inning on just seven pitches (haha way to be patient Minnesota) while closer Matt Barnes recorded his second save of the season thanks to two strikeouts and a great diving catch by Alex Verdugo (2 for 4) in left field to end it. 

    Game 2 looked like it would be a pitcher's duel between Eduardo Rodriguez (2-0) and Minnesota's ace Jose Berrios (2-1) but that's not exactly how it played out. The Twins actually had a 1-0 lead for a few innings as left fielder Kyle Garlick (what a great name) knocked in third baseman Josh Donaldson with a sacrifice fly. Berrios cruised through the first four innings but he started to labor in the fifth inning and Minnesota's manager Rocco Baldelli had a strangely quick hook which immediately blew up in his face. Cordero walked with the bases loaded which scored third baseman Rafael Devers (2 for 4, 2 RBIs, run, 2B). Baldelli elected to swap Berrios for something called Tyler Duffey and what do you know, it didn't work! Verdugo's (3 for 4, 3 RBIs, 2 runs) two-run single scored first baseman Bobby Dalbec and catcher Christian Vazquez with the go-ahead runs. Cordero came around to score on a wild pitch by Duffey and finally, Devers greeted another scrub Twins reliever (the immortal Caleb Thielbar) with a two-run single of his own that scored DH J.D. Martinez and Verdugo. 

    The promising part for E-Rod is that he was far from at his best but he went five innings and only allowed one earned run on five hits with five strikeouts and a walk. Credit to Red Sox GM Chaim Bloom for discovering Rule-5 pick Garrett Whitlock from the Yankees. The righty reliever had his third consecutive scoreless outing, pitching a clean sixth inning with one strikeout in 10 pitches. Expect his role to expand as the season goes along, he is a real weapon out of the bullpen (and eventually in the rotation) for Boston with quality stuff. After Verdugo's solo bomb in the seventh (his 2nd HR of the season), it became such a laugher that the Red Sox were able to use their 26th man (called up since rosters expand for a doubleheader) righty Eduard Bazardo who made his MLB debut. It was a little rocky as it took him 24 pitches to get three outs since he walked two guys but he got a strikeout and most importantly didn't allow a run as Red Sox manager Alex Cora (who in Game 1 collected his 200th MLB victory) got to rest his top bullpen guys. 

    Tomorrow is Jackie Robinson Day in MLB so every player will be wearing his No. 42. Boston goes for the sweep with its worst starter-Garrett Richards (0-1)-looking for his first win as a Red Sox-going up against former Yankees pine tar aficionado Michael Pineda (1-0). It's another afternoon game with an hour earlier start time (1:10, NESN) so that Boston can hopefully get back home before it's too late tomorrow night. They also bid for their 10th straight win which would make them the second team in MLB-after the Dodgers (10-2) of course-to reach double digit victories in mid-April.

The Red Sox Open The 2021 Season With A Lifeless 3-0 Shutout Loss To The Orioles At Fenway

 

    Don't expect to see recaps from every Red Sox game this season on this wonderful blog. That is, unless they start to be good and/or interesting again. This afternoon at freezing Fenway Park, they hosted the Orioles in the 2021 regular season opener after Thursday was postponed because it rained in the morning (haha but was clear in the afternoon). Opening Day is always one of the best times in an MLB season but they don't exactly have the same excitement around them when your team stinks and there isn't much hope that will change anytime soon. O's lefty John Means pitched a gem (7 IP, 1 hit, 5 Ks, 0 BBs) as Baltimore (1-0) blanked Boston (0-1) 3-0 in game one of a three-game Easter weekend series. It wasn't exactly optimal hitting conditions but both teams had to deal with it and one did way better than the other: Baltimore outhit Boston 9-2. This was the first time since 1976 (!) that the Red Sox were shut out in their home opener. 

     For awhile, this was shaping up to be a pretty good pitchers' duel as Boston's starter Nathan Eovaldi (5.1 IP, 1 ER, 4 hits, 4 Ks, 1 BB) cruised through five scoreless innings before he got pulled with one out in the sixth. Blame the nerds who shuddered at the thought of him facing the O's lineup for the third time not to mention the fact that he had thrown 89 pitches. Red Sox reliever Matt Andriese was the first guy out of their bullpen and he promptly gave up a two-run double-scoring catcher Pedro Severino and first baseman Trey Mancini-off the Green Monster to something called Ryan Mountcastle who was Baltimore's DH. Orioles right fielder Anthony Santander-the namesake of the crappy bank that I have used since college-added an insurance run with an RBI single in the eighth off Red Sox lefty Josh Taylor that scored center fielder Cedric Mullins.

    Boston's two hits couldn't have been placed much further apart in the game: second baseman Kike Hernandez hit a lead-off single in the bottom of the first then was promptly picked off first base. DH J.D. Martinez hit a two-out double in the bottom of the ninth before shortstop Xander Bogaerts (0-for-4 with strikeout) lined out to right to end it. Baltimore's set-up man Tanner Scott walked two in the eighth but he managed to pitch a scoreless frame by striking out rookie first baseman Bobby Dalbec (on 3 pitches!) with two outs and runners on first and second. Reliever Austin Brice made his Red Sox debut and got the last two outs in the eighth while Japanese import Hirokazu Sawamura pitched a scoreless ninth in his first MLB inning. The Orioles closer is a guy named Cesar Valdez and he worked around that Martinez double for a scoreless ninth inning with a strikeout for the save.

    It is supposed to be a little warmer tomorrow afternoon (1:10, NESN) as former Mets great turned journeyman starting pitcher Matt Harvey takes on Red Sox rookie Tanner Houck who was one of their few brightspots in last season's debacle of a shortened season. Harvey seems like the perfect guy for the Red Sox offense to wake up against. I say that and he'll probably shut them down while Houck will get shelled. Ugh, remember when this team mattered and you actually enjoyed watching baseball? That feels like so long ago since the last two years might as well have not happened for the Red Sox. I think that many people have already tuned them out for good but I do believe that they have a short window here to be competitive before almost everyone else stops paying attention in 2021. No pressure guys!
