Mere days after announcing an extension for Brad Marchand, the Bruins have announced that they have locked up forward Tyler Seguin through 2018-19.
Seguin signed a six-year, $34.5 million dollar extension that commences at the end of the upcoming season. The 20-year-old former No. 2 overall pick in 2010 stepped up last year and led the Bruins in scoring with 29 goals and 38 assists for 67 points. His annual salary has been bumped up to $5.75 million dollars per year, second to only captain and defenseman Zdeno Chara.
After watching fellow young stars (from the same draft class) Jeff Skinner and Taylor Hall get nice extensions over the summer from the Hurricanes and Oilers respectively, Bruins fans knew that it was only going to be a matter of time for the front office to lock up the speedy second-year winger. Since the Chiarelli regime took over, they have done a nice job keeping their most talented players, which is a good or bad thing depending on who you ask.
I personally like keeping the nucleus of the team together, while supplementing them with solid role players rather than splurge on high priced free agents that seem to be busts quite often. Though Zach Parise would’ve looked great in Black and Gold, it is important to keep in mind that basically this collection of players won the Stanley Cup in 2011. Holding on to guys like Marchand and Seguin should keep this team competitive for the foreseeable future and that's all we can ask for.
For tweens, teenagers and college girls around New England, Seguin was already the most popular pro athlete in Boston (sorry Gronk, Brady, Ellsbury and Rondo). The fact that he is now obscenely rich means that the Puck Sluts should be on high alert as long as he is not married and living the life. Where you at Ciara Price (Playboy Playmate from Maine-pictured above-that was dating Seguin last season)?
