Poor David Ortiz, None Of His Teams Can Win Games Anymore

You are forgiven if you missed David Ortiz's abbreviated appearance at the 2012 MLB All-Star Game in Kansas City this evening. It was basically as forgettable as the Red Sox (43-43) this season.

Boston's designated hitter batted seventh for the American League and went 1-for-2 with a single but the National League won 8-0 at Kaufmann Stadium for their third straight win overall. That gives the NL team home-field advantage in the World Series but Boston won't have to worry about that.

In the bottom of the second, Ortiz faced Giants pitcher Matt Cain who started the game. Big Papi gave it a decent ride to left field by the foul pole but Brewers outfielder Ryan Braun caught it for the third out.

Most thought Ortiz would only get one at bat but he stepped to the plate with one out in the fifth and made the most of it by singling to left off Dodgers ace Clayton Kershaw. Ortiz eventually reached third base later in the inning but was stranded when Rangers second baseman Ian Kinsler flew out with the bases loaded to end the AL's best (and only real) threat.

Ortiz chose to skip the pointless Home Run Derby last night but he still could use a break since he's been the Red Sox' best player in the first half. Along with the rest of MLB, he'll get to relax the next two days before heading to Tampa Bay for a three-game series that begins on Friday night.
